A brief History of Jammu

The ancient tradition as described in Raja-Darshini is that Jammu Rajya(State) had a small beginning when Agnigir the younger son of king Sudarshan( who was descendant in line of Rama of Ayodhya) migrated from Ayodhya to Shalala hills and reached the banks of Ravi in region of present day's Kathua. He was succeeded by his son Vayu-Shrava, who extended his rule up to the Ujh. His successors in line were Parmetra, Puran Singh, Lakhan, Khat-Joshan and Agnigarbh.
Agnigarbh was very ambitious. With help of his 18 son he extended his rule up to River Tawi. His elder son Bahu Lochan succeeded him.He founded new town Dharanagri and transferred his capital from Airava. He also Built Bahufort on left bank of Tawi River.He died in a battle with Raja of Madar Desh (Modern Punjab). His younger brother Jambu Lochan took over the ruler-ship.Once on a hunting expedition across the river Tawi, he waas amazes to see Tiger and Goat Drinking water at the same pond. He thought that the place have some virtue so he founded a town there named Jambupura, which later Changed to Jamboo, Jambu and Jammu.

Shakti Karan invented Dogri Script and he extended the empire up to Banihal.
Shiv Prakash  was last of this dynasty and was defeated by Raja Shal od Sialkot who annexed Jammu.
